VATEUR, the European Region of the network, proudly presents 4th edition of its biggest online event:

But this time, thanks to cooperation from other regions, we’re going global! Reserve free time during the weekend of 6th and 7th of May, cause that’s the one you can’t miss! Here’s what you can expect:

VATEUR:

Whole Europe, including Shanwick Oceanic, online from 14UTC until 23UTC on Saturday May 7th

VATPAC:

VATIL:

VATSIM Israel continues it's tradition of opening a fully staffed control room for a spring time marathon! VATIL's controllers will provide uninterrupted ATC from 14UTC Friday May 6th until 20UTC Saturday May 7th. Booking available at http://www.vatil.org/vatil/passover/booking.php

VATUS, VATCAN, VATBR

Online from 19UTC Saturday May 7th, with Gander and Moncton Oceanic operating from 16UTC.

And that's not all! We expect Mexico and other south American vACCs to participate too. This is really what everyone could have only dreamed for - short haul, long haul, Oceanic crossings, and everything with ATC provide - forget the ugly "frequency change approved"!

Dear divisional VACC directors, dear staff colleagues!


Now that OneSky 4 is some days behind us, let me first thank all participating ATC and pilots for their efforts, the time they spent online and their dedication trying to make this event a success. My special thanks also to Krzyszstof Szerszen, who has worked very hard to get all the VATSIM regions and divisions together to make OneSky a worldwide event. From the initial progress on May 7th, until 1600z, the traffic figures clearly showed that our idea was right, and that we had been on the best way to set new a new milestone for an online event.

Unfortunately at this moment the network technology was not our best friend. Our servers had a hard time communicating with each other, and the result were severe network failures. The first one lasted for almost 40 minutes, and during the evening this continued. At the outcome lots of participants lost the motivation to stay online because it was impossible for them to continue controlling or flying. Others stayed online despite all contrarieties, and the traffic figures were still high during the whole evening.

We don´t know exactly yet what happened during the OneSky 4 evening, but for sure we now know that the statements made before the event, that out network could cope easily with thousands of connections, were not true.
If there is any positive outcome of OneSky 4, then it is the insight, that we need fundamental changes in the way our network is managed, and how software for our network is developed and distributed. We do not only need better technology, we need better attitudes and better policies also. Be ensured that I will do my best to make this happen.
